Hi, I’m Helen Petrovic (I write as H. L. Petrovic). I love speculative fiction, particularly epic/high fantasy, and that’s what I write. Thanks for stopping by. Below you will find information about the two sides of me – the side that loves to read, and the side that loves to write.
H.L. PETROVIC – WRITER
I spend most of my day with my feet on the ground and my head in the clouds. When I’m not riding a dragon, practicing magic or being whisked off to far-away worlds I spend my days catering to the every whim of two benevolent but demanding pixies and a knight in shining armour.
I’ve been serving my writing apprenticeship for over 5 years now, and have spent that time honing my craft via daily writing, two completed manuscripts (White Eyes in now heading off to the US-of-A for submission), over a million words written (how can it already be that many?) and attending a number of writer’s workshops including masterclasses held by Kate Forsyth, Garth Nix and Kathryn Heyman.
Last year, I judged for the Aurealis Awards (Australian Speculative Fiction). You can read all about the awards here.
I write and self-publish romance under a pseudonym which has given me fantastic insights into the marketing and promotion required for self-publishing.
I’m passionate about writing. I’m passionate about women’s issues, representation of women in fantasy and the opportunities (many unrealised) that fantasy offers tell women’s stories.
Success to date:
– WHITE EYES – TOP 10 PITCHES, PITCH YOUR BOOK AUSTRALIA COMPETITION
You can see my post here which includes my b-grade video. It was so much fun to make!
– WHITE EYES – HIGHLY COMMENDED, AUSTRALIAN SOCIETY OF AUTHORS WRITERS’ AND ILLUSTRATORS’ MENTORSHIPS

HELEN @ highfantasyaddict – READER
Ever since I first picked up J. R. R. Tolkien in the fourth grade, I’ve been addicted to High Fantasy. Nothing beats High Fantasy for its massive scope, sweeping vistas and incredible worlds that teem with life and pulsate with unique history.
I love to read multiple volumes. I love that High Fantasy lets you know characters so intimately that they become your friends. It’s unpredictable (anything and everything is possible), yet it’s also a way to hold a mirror to the wrongs of our world, and to show places where love, justice, truth and heroism survive cynicism. Where good people can still choose to do good things.
I began this blog to explore and celebrate High Fantasy through book reviews and discussion, reviewing both new and classic works (and mostly just to read my bookshelves!)
If you’ve read this far, thanks. If you like my site, please comment or send me a message (and please forgive me if I’m slow to respond – the above-mentioned pixies really do take up all my time!)
