About H. L. Petrovic

Hi, I’m Helen! I love speculative fiction, particularly fantasy, and that’s what I write. Thanks for stopping by!

H. L. Petrovic BIO

I spend most of my day with my feet on the ground and my head in the clouds. When not riding a dragon, practising magic or being whisked off to far-away worlds I spend my days catering to the whims of two benevolent but demanding pixies and a knight in shining armour.

With a degree in Media and Communications and a Diploma of Secondary Education, I’ve worked across a number of roles including graphic design for a wine company, high school English teacher, and EA in a major investment firm.

I’ve attending writing workshops with Kate Forsyth, Garth Nix, Kathryn Heyman and Angela Slatter. I’ve judged for the Aurealis Awards (Australian Speculative Fiction). You can read all about the awards here.

I write and self-publish romance under a pseudonym which has given me fantastic insights into the marketing and promotion required for self-publishing.

I’m passionate about writing. I’m also passionate about women’s representation in fantasy and the opportunities (many unrealised) that fantasy offers tell women’s stories.

When not writing, I like to sew my own clothes, make messes in the kitchen, attempt to grow things in my garden that are not weeds, escape unlocked rooms, run (it’s the only time I’m not carrying a ton of bags!), dress up in ridiculous costumes, and teach my daughters to be strong, independent women who follow their dreams.

Successes:

– WHITE EYES – TOP 10 PITCHES, PITCH YOUR BOOK AUSTRALIA COMPETITION

You can see my post here which includes my b-grade video. It was so much fun to make!

– WHITE EYES – HIGHLY COMMENDED, AUSTRALIAN SOCIETY OF AUTHORS WRITERS’ AND ILLUSTRATORS’ MENTORSHIPS

Link to the post here, which outlines my win and the prizes I received!

If you’ve read this far, thanks. Please feel free to comment or send me a message (and forgive me if I’m slow to respond – the above-mentioned pixies really do take up a lot of time!)

If you haven’t already read it, I recommend Godless by Ben Peek (my review) outstanding & also Gemmell nominee (also alongside Unwrapped Sky). https://uncertaintales.wordpress.com/2015/04/19/book-review-the-godless-children-1-ben-peek/

    Anyway – great stuff 🙂

    1. Thanks KT! I’ve seen Ben Peek speak at festivals – he seems like a really interesting guy (and the premise of his book looks promising too) – will def have to check out Godless. Thanks for the recommendation!
